Just over 1 year ago, we saw Hilary Clinton lose the US elections to her male running mate. Many thought Hilary, a female candidate for President, was the first. But in 1972 there was Shirley Chisholm. As the first black woman to run for president for a major political party, Shirley Chisholm was ahead of her time. She was of Guyanese and Barbadian heritage, worked in education, childcare and served in the New York state assembly. Throughout her career, she highlighted key issues regarding education opportunities, racial equality and women empowerment. This honorary MOCCA Mum also survived three assassination attempts during her trailblazing campaign for president! There are, indeed gaps in our children’s history books and in mainstream media! Shirley Chisholm is a legend and we honour her today, which would have been her 93rd birthday.
