“Will you marry me?” she asked.

On January 1st 2018, night club patrons looked on as a young Ugandan proposed to her boyfriend, an older white male. Luckily, he said yes. Surprise marriage proposals are risky, public surprise marriage proposals are riskier; public marriage proposals by a female African to a male are very, very risky and rare. Even though times are changing, female to male marriage proposals are so uncommon they make the news headlines.  Particularly the case in Africa where, historically, women have been seen as a symbol of wealth acquisition by men. This is one of the reasons why they propose and not the other way around. This is also where the bride price or dowry comes in. With roles being reversed we have to ask more questions – Will this lady be paying the bride price to her fiancé? Will she be the one visiting his family to seal the deal (proposal)? We can hear feminists in the back chanting in response, “why not?”. MOCCA Mums, thoughts?
