The Colour Black

Black is a colour generally associated with fear, negativity or mystery. In Western countries black is the colour of grief and death.

  • “black sheep” is an outcast from a family.
  • “blacklist” is a list of people or organizations to boycott or punish.
  • The word “blackmail” refers to getting something by threat.
  • The phrase “black market” refers to the illegal trade of goods.

…but last night at the Golden Globe Awards, every guest (with the exception of 2) turned out dressed in black. Black in solidarity and in silent, elegant rebellion against sexual harassment allegations and gender inequality in Hollywood. This is powerful. It’s profound. It’s positive. It’s black.

This act wouldn’t heal the wounds of victims, neither would the color black change to gold, but it’s symbolic. Symbolism plays on the individual psyche and the psyche is root of change.

This is powerful. It’s profound. It’s positive. It’s black.
